This project is about designing a limited edition book design based on a cultural / sub-culture / lifestyle characteristic that exists in Malaysia. I chose the topic of Ma-Jie (self-comb ladies???), who had life-long dedication to serve their owner’s family, generations after generations. The publication covers the fact that the culture of Ma Jie is about to be forgotten, and aims to remind people (especially younger generation) that this untold history of Ma-Jie once existed. In the process of making this publication, I had the opportunity to interview one of the remaining Ma-Jie, who once based in Penang but recently relocated to KL together with the owner’s descendant.
