About This Book

The Chessboard of Time is my way of holding on to Ah Gong. The man who cycled slowly so I could keep up, who bought me treats, and who taught me Chinese chess with endless patience. He never minded when I lost; he just smiled and said, “Try again.”

Creating this book was emotional.
Every drawing, every piece I made felt like opening an old memory. Warm, but painful in the way missing someone can be. As I worked, it felt like my heart was remembering him faster than my hands could keep up.

After he passed, I wanted something I could hold onto something that kept our memories alive. So I turned them into this chess set.

Every piece carries a part of us.
Red for my childhood energy.
Green for the calmness he taught me.

The drawings, coconut, durian, oil palm are small reminders of the days we shared. Each 3D-printed piece holds a memory, turning the moments of my childhood into something real, something I can return to whenever I miss him.
