This is a story about my grandpa (Xiu Ming). He passed away before I was born. But I’ve heard his name reverberating around me. Every morning, my grandma will bring me to the market. Everyone there calls me “XIU MING SHUN” (Hakka), which translates to “Xiu Ming’s grandson.” They remembered grandpa’s name instead of mine. Why is he still fondly remembered after 20 years of his death?
This story started in BAN HOCK HIN. This memoir of my grandpa is a tribute to my grandma in honour of his legacy. I carved his shopfront on wood to honour him. I wanted this book to reflect his true personality in a way that was original yet playful.
Grandpa,
Now that I’ve known you a little better.
This story will be told to many generations to come.
I love you, grandpa.
