Breathing Melodies is an immersive installation that honors the Kadazan-Dusun tribe’s profound connection with nature. Using breath detection and projection mapping, every exhale played through the traditional sompoton instrument awakens the forest visually and sonically, transforming the environment into a living, responsive ecosystem. The experience allows participants to feel the rhythm of nature, bridging cultural heritage and modern technology. By translating breath into melody and motion, Breathing Melodies makes the tribe’s spiritual relationship with the natural world tangible, fostering empathy, awareness, and appreciation. It exemplifies how interactive design can celebrate culture while creating deeply engaging, multisensory experiences for a contemporary audience.
